There are generally two main groups:
1) "Flush" - This method entails introducing a clean, cool liquid into the seal chamber, thus optimizing the operating environment. A secondary, smaller port—usually oriented downward—serves as a convenient leakage observation or vent opening.
2) "Barrier or Buffer" for dual seals - Here, a secondary fluid is introduced into the space separating two sets of mechanical seals. This prevents ambient air from coming into contact with the pumped fluid, improves seal cooling, and significantly enhances safety measures.
